My name is Melanie Elson.
I was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas, growing up in libraries and reading voraciously from an early age.
I left Texas behind for a wonderful life in the Air Force when I married my husband in 1981. In that time, we've lived in Texas, California, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Illinois. All four of our children have become avid readers and are wonderfully creative-and they've mostly kept out of trouble (that they'll tell me about, anyway). As for me, my passion has always been in the fiber arts: my grandmother and mother taught me how to sew and embroider. From there, I fell in love with cross-stitch and enjoyed working with linens and silks and Handanger stitchery. Lately my calling has turned to knitting, spinning wool to make yarn, and weaving. (Llamas and sheep run when they see me holding shears.)
My main loves are middle grade and young adult, but I love fiction, science fiction and mysteries. My top two children's authors will always be Madeline L'Engle and Tamora Pierce. Both have wonderfully strong female characters.
Harry Potter remains a forever fave-especially some of the fanfiction out there.
If you're looking for local authors, Lexie Dunne has a wonderful series (and no I'm not biased!).
Virginia Lanier's Bloodhound series is a great read with a strong resilient female character and DOGS!
